ECAT APPLAUDS HOUSE PASSAGE OF U.S.-PERU TRADE AGREEMENT

Vote Augurs Well for Robust U.S. Engagement in the Global Economy

Washington, D.C., November 8, 2007: Harold McGraw III, Chairman, President and CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies, and Chairman of the Emergency Committee for American Trade (ECAT), applauded today’s House vote to approve and implement the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA):

“Free trade is critical to the continued economic prosperity of the United States and to the expansion of the global economy. ECAT congratulates the House of Representatives for its strong, bipartisan vote in support of the U.S.-Peru TPA, which will open markets and promote a more robust and transparent rules-based trading system between our two countries.  The House has sent a clear message that it continues to support the United States’ engagement in the global economy through policies that will improve U.S. competitiveness and benefit U.S. farmers, manufacturers, services providers and their workers.”

ECAT’s President, Calman Cohen, made the following statement:

ECAT and its member companies applaud the work of both House and Administration leaders who worked together in support of passage of this agreement, including Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel and Ranking Member Jim McCrery and U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab.  ECAT looks forward to Senate action on the Peru agreement, as well as Congress’ approval of the other key trade agreements that have been negotiated.”
