ECAT PRESENTS 2008 AWARDS TO SENATORS MARIA CANTWELL AND ORRIN HATCH

U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab Presents Keynote Address

Washington, D.C., March 4, 2008:  In its 41st year, the Emergency Committee for American Trade (ECAT) held its annual dinner presenting the 2008 ECAT Trade and Investment Leadership Awards to Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington and Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah for their strong support for pro-growth international trade and investment policies.

United States Trade Representative Ambassador Susan C. Schwab gave the keynote address emphasizing the Administration’s non-stop efforts to achieve a breakthrough in the Doha Development Agenda negotiations and secure Congressional approval of the pending trade agreements.

In presenting the awards at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery this evening, Harold McGraw III, Chairman, President and CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies and Chairman of ECAT, said:

“Tonight, we pay tribute to two individuals whose tenacity, vision and courage have been and will continue to be critical to the formation and implementation of trade policies and trade agreements that are squarely in the United States’ interest.

In presenting the ECAT award to Senator Orrin Hatch, Mr. McGraw stated:

“We honor Senator Hatch for his unwavering work to promote the protection of intellectual property rights internationally and Congressional approval of strong trade agreements that promote economic growth and opportunity for Americans.

In presenting the ECAT award to Senator Maria Cantwell, Mr. McGraw stated:

“We honor Senator Cantwell for her strong work to open markets for American farmers, manufacturers and service providers in our own hemisphere, China and beyond, as well her work to improve U.S. competitiveness globally.”

Mr. McGraw also emphasized ECAT’s strong support for a breakthrough in the Doha Development Agenda negotiations that will lead to an ambitious conclusion and Congressional approval this year of the pending trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and Korea.
